Recordings

Although the site has grown exponentially, our initial project was to create and share audio and video recordings of historically significant versions and variants of U.S. patriotic song. Our first recordings were of the original 1814 version of “The Star-Spangled Banner” and its source tune “The Anacreontic Song.”

We also are happy to share free of charge our “educational combo version” of these recordings in which we’ve spliced together the first verses of “The Anacreontic Song” and “The Star-Spangled Banner” (original version). You can listen to and download this recording below via our Soundcloud tool.

Your “Anacreon – 1814 SSB Educational Combo” Recording

“The Anacreontic Song” (also known as “To Anacreon in Heaven” or just “Anacreon”) was the club anthem of an amateur musicians society and supper club in London, England known as The Anacreontic Society. The music to this song was written by John Stafford Smith — an English organist and composer. For more download options, join our Star Spangled Teachers Network.
