Star-Spangled Stories

Star-Spangled Stories Contest

Many people have stories about “The Star-Spangled Banner”: memories from childhood, inspiring moments, humorous experiences, and much more. We are developing a radio program and a series of public service announcements to showcase diverse, interesting, and inspiring stories from across the nation. Read the Star-Spangled Stories Information Sheet for more about how to get involved.

Here’s an example by music education student Jared Rawlings: My Star-Spangled Banner Story. We’d love to hear from you too!

WHEN I WAS A YOUNG BOY IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WE WOULD START THE DAY RECITING THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE AND SINGING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM. ONE DAY WHILE SINGING MY HEART OUT THE TEACHER JUST HAPPENED TO BE STANDING NEXT TO ME. WHEN THE SONG CONCLUDED, SHE QUERIED ME AS TO THE LYRICS OF A CERTAIN STANZA. I REPLIED “DIRT BOMBS BURSTING IN AIR GAVE PROOF…” ONCE I EXPLAINED TO HER THAT DIRT BOMBS WERE CLODS OF SOIL INTER-CITY YOUTH HURLED AT ONE ANOTHER AS WEAPONS (THINK SUMMER SNOWBALLS) AFTER SHE REGAINED HER COMPOSURE, SHE INFORMED ME THAT I HAD THE WORDS WRONG! SAY IT ISN’T SO. I WAS HUMILIATED.
